formuls is the algo-synth (algorithmically generated sound synthesis software) project created by James Dooley. During performance, all sound is synthesised by the formuls algo-synth: no pre-made samples are used. Its modular design features a number of sound generation and manipulation units including additive and subtractive synthesisers, slicers, sequencers and FX. Timing and synchronisation between modules is controlled by a master audio rate signal. Via touchscreen interfaces, modules are programmed to produce kaleidoscopic streams of sound, which when combined with one another result in complex cross rhythms.
